Training in infection
Updated Aug 07
Modernising Medical Careers (MMC)
As a result of MMC, ID/GIM and ID/micro/virology trainees have entered training at ST3, and medical microbiology trainees at ST1. There are now discussions underway regarding the structure of future training programmes for all infection-related specialties. Proposed options will take into account the future role of 'Infection Specialists' in hospitals, and possible training schemes are currenty in embryonic form and are to be put to the Academy of Colleges later this year. We will update this page as more definitive information becomes available. (Harriet Hughes, BIS Trainee Representative)

Please see the College websites for official updated information.
A basic summary is as follows:
• MRCP: Trainees in ID/GIM will need to have PACES before proceeding to ST3. Whether or not joint ID/micro trainees will be required to have PACES is still under discussion, but is likely.
• MRCPath: Micro and ID/Micro trainees will take MRCPath during speciality training according to a training timetable specified in the Microbiology curriculum (under discussion).
• Exit exams: under discussion.
Tropical training
Accreditation in Tropical Medicine has traditionally been restricted to very few trainees, but this may change as the structure of tropical training also changes under MMC. More information should be available soon.
