ACCEA National Awards 2010. Closing date for submission is 11 December 2009. Anyone wishing to gain support for their application must submit their application to the British Infection Society Higher Awards Committee by 4 September 2009.

 

The British Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy is currently involved in a project relating to OPAT (Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy), and is keen for BIS members to be involved in this project. An open meeting will be held on 22 October 2009 in Birmingham and an invitation is extended to anyone interested.

 

Linacre Lecture for 2010. Applications are currently being invited the Royal College of Physicians to deliver this lecture. Applicants must be under the age of 40 on 30 Sept 2009 (closing date for applications) and must be members of the Royal College of Physicians of London. Leaflet available.

 

Barnett Christie Lecture. Junior doctors and scientists are invited to apply to deliver this lecture at the FIS conference. Closing date for applications: 9 September 2009.

 

British Infection Society and Hospital for Tropical Diseases recommendations on the management of fever in the returned traveller are published in the July 2009 issue of the Journal of Infection. The recommendations are also available on the guidelines page of this website.

 Royal College of Pathologists Gold and Specialty Research Medal Awards

The Gold Research Medal is awarded for the best research undertaken in all specialties in that calendar year while the specialty Research medals are awarded to the best candidates in each of the major specialties of the College.

Swine Influenza. As of 29th April nine countries have officially reported 148 cases of swine influenza A/H1N1 infection. There are 91 laboratory confirmed human cases with one death from the US,  Mexico reported 26 confirmed human cases including seven deaths. The World Health Organisation has raised the influenza pandemic alert level from phase 4 to phase 5. 2009 Graham Bull prize in Clinical Science now open.

Awarded by the Royal College of Physicians, applications are invited from clinicians and basic scientists from a wide area of expertise such as molecular and cellular biology, psychiatry or health sciences.
