Clinical Excellence Awards

BIS is one of the specialist societies able to make recommendations about consultants to be considered for national clinical excellence awards, and is registered as such with the Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards (ACCEA). A formal subcommittee has taken on this role.

Nominated by the BIS Council, it includes award holders, representing different branches of the infection specialties and different geographical areas and lay representation. The subcommittee also makes recommendations on behalf of BIS to the NHS in Wales and to the Scottish Advisory Committee on Distinction Awards (SACDA).

The Society is only able to make nominations for national awards (Bronze, Silver Gold or Platinum, or the equivalent awards in Scotland). We expect that BIS recommendations will normally be in the context of members who already receive significant support at the local level. Individual members need to ensure that they are fully aware of the regulations and procedures (full details can be found on the relevant website). According to the ACCEA, specialist societies ‘should concentrate their evaluation on contributions to the speciality or appropriate grouping and should not make an assessment of contributions to the local employer…’ Colleagues will generally be seeking support already from their Trust and appropriate Royal College or Faculty, and nominees would not normally seek support from more than one Society with overlapping areas of expertise.
